With the release of this, our 15th edition, La Voz Latina Newspaper will go out of
circulation indefinately. Since August of 2002, when we began this project, we've dedicated a
great deal of time and energy to establishing the county's first Latino-oriented publication.
Now the time has come to move on to other projects and other objectives. When we founded the
newspaper, we had many goals and ideas, but little capital and no experience in publishing.
Nevertheless, with a lot of hard work and the advice and support of many in the community, we
were able to get the paper off the ground. Looking back over the past year and a half, we
feel very gratified. In just over a year of publication, La Voz Latina has succeeded in
providing information to many of the area's Latino immigrants, hopefully making their lives
in America a little happier and healthier. While our goal of increasing understanding between
Latinos and non-Latinos was always a long-term prospect, we like to think that the paper has
helped people in both communities to feel a little closer to one another. And as individuals,
we have certainly been enriched by our involvement in this project, and by our contact with
the many people we've met through it.
We see nothing but positive signs for the future of the county's Latino community. It will
certainly continue its rapid growth, and new businesses will continue to emerge to serve it,
undoubtably including other Spanish-language newspapers. If anyone in the community is
interested in continuing the work we've started, we'd welcome the opportunity to provide them
with the tools they'd need to re-establish a Latino press in this area.
If there's one thing we've learned through our experiences with La Voz Latina, it's that
Washtenaw County is full of wonderful and talented people - Latinos and non-Latinos - with a
real desire to help others. Within these individuals lies the true strength of the community.
For the past year, it has been our pleasure to serve this community, and we wish it nothing
but the best in years to come. To everyone who has helped and supported us along the way, we
offer you our sincere thanks.
